Newspapers in Action Feature

In late November, NIE did a Sunday feature on my recent works and how being an alumni of Florida Atlantic University (Go Owls) has affected me and my career.  We were so flattered by the write up, we included it on the web site.

Doug's Background

A native South Floridian currently residing in Deerfield Beach, FL, marine life artist, Doug Bolly has been making a splash with collectors and fans worldwide. Bolly's artwork captures the fragile beauty and sensitive spirit of Florida's marine sanctuaries. He is noted for his photorealistic yet lively portrayals of Dolphins, Sea Turtles, and game fish; and “he possesses an unusual talent for creating underwater perspectives and light“.

He completed a record setting feat while creating life size undersea murals on the wheel houses of 2 coastal freighters which became a part of Palm Beach County's Artificial Reef Program in February 2002. Three vessels, the St. Jacques, GilbertSea, and the Shasha Boekanier were brought to Miami under drug seizure, sitting in the Miami River for more than a year, were "recycled" under a Coast Guard Drug cleanup program, and finally came to rest as the Governor's Riverwalk Reef off of Lake Worth Inlet.  In April of of 2002, Gov. Jeb Bush dedicated the reef to the State of Florida in a ceremony in which Bolly was honored for his contribution to the project.

Bolly is also known for several murals within the theme park, Miami Seaquarium, depicting Lolita the Killer Whale, manatees and coral reefs alive with color and activity. These murals are all lifesize representations and each mural averages 1200 square feet or more.

In 2004, Bolly was invited by Bethesda Memorial Hospital to produce an eight mural project spanning the entire Hyperbaric Treatment Unit.  These murals set a tranquil mood through oceanic, reef, and tropical vistas.

Since fall of 2006, Bolly has been traveling with the Bass Pro Shops Imagery Team.  This group of artists, carpenters, designers, and craftsmen are responsible for adding the "magic" that separates Bass Pro from every other retailer.  They are the sole, driving force that creates all of the dioramas, murals, wall and floor displays.  They create what people essentially refer to as the "Disney-effect" or the "Wow-factor".  To date, he has traveled from Florida to Illinois, California, and Alabama.

Though through Bass Pro, Bolly has painted all genre, he is best known for scenes and scenarios full of life from Florida and the Keys, to the Caribbean and tropical worlds beyond. "I believe an artist should not just paint, but instead should give of himself as his means. By using themes that are the building blocks of my overall character, I feel that each piece I produce is of pure honesty. Through these offerings of my past and my beliefs, I hope viewers can always see my works and feel a part of me as well as of themselves".

Bolly graduated from Florida Atlantic University and has received many professional and academic honors for both his artistic and environmental work.
